Worksop A 60

South Yorks Police 45

JAMES Roberts hit a personal best 20 points to lead Worksop’s A team to a comfortable victory over South Yorkshire Police in their opening fixture of 2013.

After an even opening to the game, Worksop forged ahead and were rarely troubled thereafter.

Brett Shelton and Mateusz Domanski scored four each in the opening minutes as the game moved to 8-8.

Roberts then found his scoring touch and netted all eigh points in an 8-0 Worksop run going into the first break, giving them a 16-8 lead.

Adam Drabble netted four points early in the second as Worksop began to turn the screw.

Worksop were relying heavily on their medium range jump shots against the big Police zone and they were in good form with Shelton, Domanski and Jamie Clarke adding to the score to take Worksop in 28-16 up at the half

Worksop opened the third with an 8-2 run, coach Steve Lawes getting on the scoresheet for the first time on the night.

The lead peaked at 20 midway through the period, before the Police mounted a brief comeback to trail by just 12 at the final break, 40-28.

Roberts came to the fore again early in the fourth and sank Worksop’s first six points.

Brett Shelton then nailed four of four free-throws to make the game safe.

The sides traded baskets for the remainder of the game but Worksop were always in control from then on in.

Worksop: Roberts 20, Shelton 10, Lawes 10, Drabble 8, Mark Boot 6, Domanski 4, Clarke 2.
