Sportsblog: Kerry's charity work

KICKBOXING champ Kerry Louise Norbury details another week of her life for the Dinnington Guardian.

My foot from kicking Alex's elbow last week was still very swollen so I had to stick to boxing skills on the bag, I had a good training session and I like boxing but was a little restricted.

In tot's class we did a team event which all the kids loved, it was actually a technique lesson in disguise!

Friday

I went to get the medals for my competition tomorrow. Me and Carl (the work experience) cleaned the gym and got the room ready.

Leif came over as he is helping with the coaching and judging tomorrow as well as being here to take part in this weekends British squad trials.

I got in another hands only bag work session, I hate having an injury because your mind makes you feel guilty for not training but I just can't use it, I cant even get my foot into my trainers!

Saturday came and it was my interclub competition. We had 33 fights in 3 different disciplines. We do not do full contact in interclubs as we don't want to put any of the children off. So we do light contact kickboxing, points karate and grappling. My schedule was to finish by 3pm and we did! Every single fighter put their heart and sole into the fights they had, whether they were experienced fighters, or first timer. I am well proud of them all!

We went for some lunch with Dave and Adele Terry the Instructors from Manchester who were over for the competition and got ourselves freshened up to go to Burton on Trent to coach Steve Salter (one of our amateurs) who was fighting full contact. He keeps knocking his opponents out in the first round and Cris wanted him to get some ring experience and he wanted it to go the distance but Steve was far too strong for his opponent and he won by TKO in round 1. Another win for Falcon Fight Academy!

Sunday saw 30 top fighters come to our gym in Dinnington for the WAKO GB squad trials. It went excellent, there was only a few nose bleeds! I took part for the K1 rules trial and we will just have to wait and see if I get picked for the squad, hope so!

I took the class after and some of the students who took part in the interclub were there. They said they thoroughly enjoyed it and they can't wait for the next one. It is lovely to here positive feedback, it makes it all worthwhile!

Had a good K1 lesson working the clinch and using knees, it's something that I need to work on. We then did a 6 station circuit to finish the class. It consisted of, full power boxing, shin conditioning on the tyre, a knee station, full power legs, shin conditioning and working from hands to knees. Good lesson!

Went to SDF and trained with Shane again working the clinch. We did 1 round of clinch and 1 round of sparring for an hour. It was a good work out and an informative session whilst very strenuous.

Had a great open session as it was "beat your partner day." Every thing we do is for 40 seconds then your partner has a go to try to beat your score then it is your go to beat your first score and if you don't it is 10 burpees punishment! It is a really good session for all fitness levels. We then did a basic power session just working on good technique and good power. Then I sparred with Lee Morgans. We did dome application work and finished off with 3 rounds of sparring. I just boxed as my foot is still swollen and I really need to rest it as it will never get better if I don't!

On Thursday I went to the Bradford Bulls Odsal Stadium to do some PR work for a charity event which is to take place 15th September. Some of the Bradford Bulls Rugby League side are helping out in a charity event where they are doing 100 rounds of kickboxing sparring later in August. It is the idea of two brothers Andy and James who will spar constantly for 100 rounds of kickboxing for a charity which helps children with cancer. We had photographs with players and the two kickboxers it was a great day!

Pictured is Kerry, Andy and James who will all be involved in raising cash for the cause. Andy and James intend to raise 10,000, good luck and what a fantastic thing to do! Thanks to Bradford Bulls players and staff for allowing this to happen. The ring will be set up in the middle of the ground at Odsal.

We are now stepping up the big push for the opening of two new classes to be featured at the centre as of next week. They will be Thai boxing under the "Black Falcon Thai" banner. Cris will also be offering a "summer holidays discount" for this class, for full details please call Cris or myself on 07973 748907.
