Sports blog: Kick boxing champ's stressful week
KERRY Louise Norbury, a world kickboxing champion, gives us an exclusive insight into her week.
This week has been a quite stressful and tiring week.
Saturday saw three people from our gym pass their Dan grades.
This is a five hour intense grading including all the elements of their chosen style of martial arts.
After the grading we had to go to Sheffield for the official weigh in for the European title fight between Valeria Mercurio from Italy and my training partner Karen Dews from Featherstone who fights out of Falcon Fight Academy Dinnington and coached personally by Cris.
After the weigh in we went to an Italian restaurant - a little bizarre to say the least prior to fighting one of their own country folk, but pasta is great for giving god carbohydrates for energy.
Sunday was the fight night. Cris was the sanctioning officer for WAKO Pro, the World Governing for kickboxing and I was the head judge for the evening alongside two other independent judges, one from Latvia and one from Italy.
I also had to weigh all the other fighters in and do all the organising at ring side.
There were 10 fights in total including some fantastic K1 rules fights, Karen's fight being the top of the bill.
I think she brought all of Featherstone with her to cheer her on. There were loads of Yorkshire lasses and lads!
She won her fight very well and started to celebrate and we didn't stop until 4am.
We were up early Monday as Karen's daughter was off on her holiday and they had to get home.
I then had a great job of writing up the results and doing a fight report on the night so we could meet the deadline for the national magazine that Cris and I both write for. And before we knew it, it was 2am; we had been on the computer all day!
Tuesday saw another business day, this time in Birmingham. It started at 12pm and didn't finish until 6.30pm
I drove home and Cris had another meeting at 8.30pm, where I scraped in a gym session. Its all go!
We had a trident worker start this week and today his work really started to be stepped up. We do not make work experiences make tea and coffee we actually make them work. He had to do a stock check which kept him occupied.
Open session was really good we did interval training which really makes your heart and lungs work! It basically mimics the way the pressure and workload varies over each kickboxing round.
Unfortunately Thursday was not a good day as we had to attend a funeral of one of our students, he was involved in a road traffic accident on a motorcycle.
We would like to say on behalf of Falcon Fight Academy and all the members: "Rest our dear friend, you will be sadly missed."
Although training was hard after this awful day I did speed and reaction work in the evening.
We are now stepping up the big push for the opening of two new classes to be featured at the centre. They will be Thai boxing under the "Black Falcon Thai" banner.
