Rugby: Heavy away defeat

AS good as they were in their last game, Dinnington were as bad in this.

YORKSHIRE DIVISION ONE

Selby 35

Dinnington 8

Numerous errors and a home side capable of capitalising saw the visitors suffer a heavy defeat.

Dinnington had to make some late changes to their line-up but still started brightly, making early ground.

The early lineouts worked well but Selby opened the scoring after seven minutes with a penalty.

Dinnington's forwards made 50 yards following a lineout and set up Ryan Donnelly for a try.

Much of the half was even between the two sides before Selby regained the lead with another penalty, after Dinnington were offside.

Dinnington were off target with a penalty attempt soon after but were then hit by two fortuitous home tries.

Firstly, at a Dinnington lineout on their own five metre line, the referee failed to spot Selby knocking the ball on before they pounced as it crossed the line.

Then, in the closing minute of the half, Selby took a quick penalty away from the mark and a cross-field kick set up an easy score for the full-back.

The second try was converted leaving Dinnington trailing 18-5 at the break.

Possession and territory-wise Dinnington were always in the game in the second half but despite long periods of pressure in the Selby 22 they could not score.

Selby extended their lead with a converted try, after missed tackles allowed them through, and then exchanged penalties just past the mid-point of the half to lead 28-5.

Darren Cannadine was on target for Dinnington.

Dinnington were completely out of the game when Selby used the advantage law well to run in their fourth try.

Dinnington take Skipton at home tomorrow. Kick off 2.15pm.

Dinnington II 15

Cleckheaton II 14

DINNINGTON seconds came out on top in a close game, but were hanging on at the end as Cleckheaton rallied.

The early encounters were even with both sides having chances and doing some stout defending.

Midway through the half Cleckheaton produced an excellent move in the backs to score.

A conversiongave them a 7-0 lead.

Dinnington responded and kept play in the visitors' half, eventually winning a penalty which Mick Yeend kicked.

Selby came straight and another well-worked move brought a try which, again, was well converted.

Dinnington had to withstand a period of pressure as Cleckheaton looked to extend their lead before they pushed play back up field.

With five minutes of the half remaining Dinnington managed to drive the visitors back at a five-metre scrum and Alistair Beverley claimed a pushover try.

Despite having the benefit of the elements, Dinnington found themselves on the defensive in the early stages of the second half as Cleckheaton concentrated play in the forwards.

However, when they were awarded a penalty after 10 minutes they were able to clear their lines and turn the pressure onto Cleckheaton.

For 20 minutes Dinnington kept play in the Cleckheaton half but it took a piece of individual skill by Michael Leitch for them to break through.

Yeend added the conversion to put the hosts one point ahead.

Cleckheaton missed a scoring opportunity, dropping the ball near the Dinnington line but with two minutes to go were awarded a penalty on the 22 just to the left of the posts.

This seemed a formality for their kicker but he pulled his kick and the home side held out for victory.

Dinnington III 13

Worksop II 7

THE thirds took the spoils in this local derby but they had to withstand a strong fight back from Worksop in the second half.

Dinnington dominated much of the play in the opening 40 minutes and should have led by more at the break.

They thought they had scored after one move only to find they had mistaken the five-metre line for the try line.

Dinnington managed one legitimate try through Bradley Page and a Josh Velenti penalty gave them an 8-0 lead at half-time.

Worksop raised their game in the second half and Dinnington were forced onto the back foot close to their own line.

They held their lead until just past the mid-point of the half when a high tackle, preventing a try, saw Dinnington having a player sent off and Worksop were awarded a penalty try.

The successful conversion put Worksop one point behind and the game in the balance.

Both sides looked capable of scoring in the last quarter but it was Richard White who sealed victory for Dinnington with a late try.
