Rugby: Big win for crowd pleasing Dinnington

DINNINGTON put in a crowd-pleasing performance as they boosted their survival chances with this victory.

The hosts made a good start against the fourt-placed side, their backs playing well again.

Six minutes in a kick ahead by James Marsden was collected by John Marshall on the Castleford 22 metre line and he ran in to score.

Darren Cannadine made it 7-0.

The lead was short lived, as within five minutes Castleford had drawn level when a cross-field kick from the back of a ruck put the visitor's winger over in the corner for a converted try.

From a quickly taken penalty Matthew Starr went in from 10 yards to put the home side back in front.

Cannadine converted to make it 14-7.

Two minutes before half-time Castleford were caught offside and Cannadine kicked the penalty to leave Dinnington 17-7 ahead at the break.

Dinnington had much of the territorial advantage in the second half but could not put points on the board as three penalty attempts were missed.

Castleford had posed little threat for much of the half but with 10 minutes to go Dinnington gave away an avoidable penalty and they were soon defending near their own line.

From a lineout Castleford moved the ball along their backs and scored to get within three points.

For the rest of the half Castleford put pressure on the Dinnington defence but the home side stood firm and in the last minute managed to clear their lines and put play in the Castleford half, where they won a penalty.

Alex Donnelly stepped forward to calm the nerves with an accurate kick and secured victory.

THE second team were beaten 21-0 by Castleford II, the thirds hammered Mosborough II 32-5, and the Veterans lost 19-10 to Scunthorpe's fifth side.
