Clark rues ‘sloppy’ play

WHEN the draw was made for the second round of the FA Trophy, Tigers boss Simon Clark was left ruing his side’s ‘sloppy’ performance on Saturday.

Kings Lynn Town’s reward for beating Worksop is a home tie against Conference Premier side AFC Telford United, a draw Clark would have relished.

He admitted: “It would have been a fantastic draw, Telford at home. But all the best to Kings Lynn Town.”

Clark pulled no punches in his assessment of a Worksop performance that left a lot to be desired, and said preparations were not ideal for the Trophy tie.

“We weren’t as good in training on Thursday before the game as we have been, we were off.”

“Before you play at home in the Trophy you have to be bang at it.”

“And then we turned up thinking we would be able to do them at 90 per cent.”

“In the second half I think they probably deserved it, with their energy, they wanted it a little more and we didn’t react to that.”

Clark pointed to his side’s inability to keep the ball, and a lack of cutting edge up front, as main reasons for the defeat.

“We were sloppy with the ball, and if you turn the ball over as much as we did you’re not going to have any momentum, any fluid possession. Our front four were average, we didn’t have great penetration.”

A chance to return to winning ways presents itself on Friday night, as Tigers travel to Frickley, a side who have ousted them from both the FA Cup and Sheffield Senior Cup this season.

Clark has called for his players to extract a measure of revenge from the game.

“It’s a chance to put a few things right, they’ve got to.”
