Academy chief is cagey on MMA move

A LOCAL martial arts club is introducing classes in the world's fastest growing contact sport – mixed martial arts.

MMA, or cagefighting, is a global phenomenon, made popular by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Cris Janson Piers, owner of Falcon Fight Academy in Dinnington, said he recognised the growth in popularity in MMA and wanted the gym to adapt.

"We always strive to evolve at a pace at which will cope with the everyday changes in martial arts, we saw the growing demand in MMA and knew it was an area we wanted to develop," he said.

"The Falcon instructors all train and are certified under John C. Higo in Leeds."

"John is the director of MMA for WAKO, the largest martial arts organisation in the world."

Higo's wife Lisa is a world champion who was recently the star of a BBC documentary on female fighters.

The MMA side of the Falcon Fight Academy has already begun to flourish, according to Janson Piers.

He told the Guardian: "Chief instructor Glyn Smith now runs the club from the centre and it is very successful, even starting to attract the ladies."

"I have a large office and store room at the gym, but very shortly it looks like the wall is coming out and the cage guys will get their own way."

"I intend to put cage facilities in and fully mat that area."

The gym will be starting beginners classes in MMA, circuit, strength and conditioning along with K1-Rules, Thai Boxing and Freestyle Karate in the next week.

Janson Piers added: "Mention that you have seen this article when calling us you and will receive a free visit to the lesson of your choice."
