A world champion kickboxer's diary
DINNINGTON'S Kerry Louise Norbury, a seven-time World kickboxing champion, details her week in the Guardian's exclusive blog.
Kerry's week...
We have another international fight night looming on 13th March, when Great Britain will take on Sweden at kickboxing here in Dinnington at the Lyric Theatre, the very first place Falcon owner Cris Janson-Piers fought. It is set to bring back some good memories. Tickets are available by calling Cris on 07973 748907.
I will be a main official at this event as I am not set to fight until mid year.
Wednesday
Went for some sprint training, a 2km warm up run and 3x3 minutes of sprinting 10 seconds sprin, 10 seconds walk over 3 minutes and one minute rest. I did it 3 times and ran 1km back home to cool down. It doesn't sound much but it is really draining. In open session we did pad work and a little application work. In sparring class we did an application circuit with movement, bag and foot work stations. We finished with sparring.
Thursday
We did techniques in the first class and in senior kickboxing we did a practical application session head movement, counter work, ring craft and foot work. We finished with five rounds of sparring.
Friday
I went for a 6km run on a different route to give me a change of scenery.
Sunday
Today was the day of the WAKO British championships and our team ran the day from 8am until 6pm. We signed in, weighed in and judged/refereed around 100 competitors. I had to do the announcements and it was my first time on a microphone. I was nervous the first time but I soon got into the swing of things and actually enjoyed it!
When it was all over we all went to the restaurant to chill out as it has been a very mentally demanding day with no resting whatsoever. Enjoyable but very tiring.
Monday
I had a well deserved lay in but when I got up I went for a 5km run and in thai boxing we did some fitness work and application work.
In the K1 lesson we did a full session on knees. Winding, normal, jumping, and scissor knees it was good and something that I will always need work on!
Tuesday
We didn't go to SDF today as both Joe and Shane are fighting this weekend.
In boxing I did 30 minutes of skipping, 5 rounds on the bags 5 rounds of shadow boxing and 5 rounds of sparring in the ring with 2 men, one of which is ranked number 7 in Great Britain.
Wednesday
We had a good hard session in open session we did 3 circuits one was on the pads the next was fitness and the last was fitness and pads combined. We worked for 4minutes and 30 seconds and then rested for the same time.
When we had done the 3 circuits we did 10 minutes of fitness. A good sweat session!
In sparring class we got the timer on and sparred throughout the class for 2 minutes with 30 seconds rest I trained in K1 with Leif and Jordan as they are both due to fight on the 13th March.
Thursday
Today was my birthday so I didn't go for my usual run, I opened presents instead! I had a little party in the tots class where all the kids were dressed up in fancy dress and we played games, passed the parcel and had a really great time. After I got the rest of the evening off as me and Cris went out for a Thai meal which was lovely.
Saturday
Today was the Instructors technique examination. Basically we had to do every technique from every syllabus and get them all right. I had to do karate and kickboxing techniques as I teach both. I think I did ok!
On Saturday I witnessed one of my training partners Joe Magovan lift the British Oriental Rules title at Sheffield, fantastic Joe! Unfortunately Shane's fighter did not show, this is not nice for anyone and I know what training he has put in for it!
This weeks training tip is actually a stretch:
This is head to knee in a hurdle type position, it is a great exercise for improving leg flexibility. Dont worry as when you start you may only be able to get half way down but it will come in time, just do this gradually.
These training tips may vary from stretches to free exercise to weighted exercise, they are designed to motivate you.
Please note, no exercise should be undertaken without consulting your doctor or a qualified trainer first.
Advice can be given and programmes arranged by contacting crisjansonpiers@googlemail.com or go to www.kopro.moonfruit.com and go to the training tips page.
