TOWN were rejuvinated with the news that Grant Allott and Jon Somerset were both set to return after injury layoffs. Shot-stopper Brad Mimms also made his awaited debut in goal.
But many first team regulars were still missing from the starting line-up.
Town started brightly and looked good in phases.
The first chance came to Town on 22 minutes when Cartledge stepped up to take a free kick 20 yards out. He hit it well but the Atherton keeper made an excellent save to keep the score level.
The home side did make the breakthrough on 28 minutes when a well-struck free kick from the left found Grant Allott to head past the keeper.
After a spirited performance, Dinnington took a well deserved lead into the second half.
However, Town didn't come out after the interval with great confidence, and found it difficult to get into Atherton's half.
The away side were looking for an equaliser and it came on 76 minutes whenSmalley lobbed over Mimms and into the net from 35 yards.
With momentum in their favour, Atherton took the lead on 84 minutes after a great strike from Lowe.
There was only one winner after that Town had to reflect on a poor second period.
