NORTH Anston teen Sam Hanby saw his title aspirations go up in smoke on Sunday during the last round of the Road Racing Club Championship.
After 12 rounds, the title came down to the last race of the season.
Sam was two points behind championship leader Marcos Tatchell after Saturday's race at Cadwell Park, so it was all on the line on Sunday.
After a good practice session in the morning, the Dinnington Comprehensive pupil was set for the final.
When the lights went out, Sam flew off the line to lead into the first corner but once on the straight the greater power of his rival's bike saw Tatchell pull past.
Coming through the twisty sections, Sam clawed his way back past, only to be taken again on the straight, and this set the pattern for the next three laps.
But without warning, Sam's engine blew in a cloud of smoke and that was game over for his title challenge.
His father Steve told the Guardian: "It was quite emotional, we had fought so hard all season, if there had been a trophy for effort we would have won it, but that's racing."
"For Sam to finish second in the championship at his first attempt is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud."
Next year Sam will move up a class to 400cc machines, which should suit his size and riding style.
Steve added: "Sam would like to thank all the people who have helped him this year including Paul Roberts Transport, Fine Sign, HMWainwrights, K&R Spares, Dust Motorcycles, family and friends for their support and the Guardian for following his progress."
