DINNINGTON lost the battle of the top two, but it was a measure of their performance that the home supporters applauded them off the pitch at the end.
Despite playing with the strong wind
at their backs, Dinnington went behind to a penalty, but were then denied a penalty themselves when the touch judges were the only two people not to see an attempt by Dean Lax pass over the bar.
Lax missed with another attempt before levelling the scores on his third attempt.
Dinnington putting the home defence under pressure and denied them any attacking opportunities.
However, they were always wary of the counter-attack.
However, midway through the half and within one metre of the Wheatley line, Dinnington were too slow moving the ball and the home winger took a gamble to intercept and run the length of the field to the posts.
Despite this setback, Dinnington continued to apply the pressure, and their efforts were rewarded five minutes from the break when an innovative chip by Lax was not dealt with by the home full-back, allowing Ian Midgley to run in.
Lax added the conversion to level the scores at 10-10.
A penalty early in the second half saw Wheatley go 13-10 ahead but Dinnington continued to play in a positive fashion and Darren Cannadine rounded off a move by scoring under the posts, giving Lax a simple conversion.
Dinnington were put under the cosh by the good kicking of the home fly-half and this led to them giving away too many penalties.
The pace of the home backs enabled them to outflank the Dinnington defence for a try to lead 20-17 and two more penalties gave them a nine-point lead.
Dinnington, to their credit, battled right up to the end but they were unable to convert a strong finish to the game into any more points.
Tomorrow, Dinnington are at home to Yarnbury, kick-off 2.15pm.

DINNINGTON came within five minutes of claiming their first victory in five games.
They were quite surprised by the lack of strength in the Wheatley pack, as they repeatedly pushed them off the scrum, despite being smaller than their opponents. Mick Yeend gave Dinnington the lead with a penalty, but too many mistakes then let Wheatley in for two tries to go 12-3 ahead.
