A DINNINGTON Comprehensive pupil needs a boost as she attempts to climb to the very top of her sport.
Rebecca Hall has been chosen to represent Great Britain in Sydney later this year in the World Wall Climbing Competition but first she has to scale a financial mountain.
The 15-year-old's trip to Australia in August will cost £2,000 and mum Helen says the fundraising has barely got off the ground.
She told the Guardian: "Raising the money is going very slowly at the moment, but her school are looking at how they can help, she's applied for a grant through the Education Board and she's trying to come up with sponsored events that she can do at school."
Proud mum Helen is especially keen for Rebecca to get the chance to travel to Australia after the disappointment she suffered through a recent injury.
Helen said: "Both myself and her dad Steve are very proud of her. She overcame an injury last year that made her miss out on all the major finals she qualified for."
"To come back from that and do even better shows how determined she is and how hard she trains."
The teenager, who trains at Sheffield climbing centre The Foundry, will be up against 18-year-olds in Sydney but Helen believes that raw talent can take her daughter to the final.
"She's probably looking to get to the semi-finals or the finals."
"She's in the 16-18s age group because of when her birthday falls but she competed in France at the Marseilles Open and came ninth against a lot of 18-year-olds."
"She definitely has a natural talent. She's been climbing for seven years now but only having coaching for two years."
Rebecca explains how she got started, after a family day out.
She said: "I went to Alton Towers and tried the little wall with my sister Annabel."
"When we got to the top dad thought we were superstars and took us to the local climbing centre where we joined the kids club."
Wall climbing is being considered as a demonstration sport for the 2012 Olympics but for now Helen is keeping the Dinnington prospect's feet on the ground.
"Long term she's probably looking for a top 10 finish in the World Wall Climbing Competition and then a podium place."
"The sport isn't yet an Olympic sport, so it doesn't receive a lot of funding, but it's up-and-coming."
