DINNINGTON Town's last pre-season friendly was perhaps the toughest of the lot – but manager Steve Toyne believes it will stand his men in good stead for tomorrow's season opener.
Town host Liversedge at Phoenix Park (3pm) in the first game of the Northern Counties East Premier, their first competitive fixture since promotion.
The final pre-season 'friendly' fixture saw them pay a visit to West Yorkshire side Bay Athletic, and Toyne says it was a pitched battle.
He told the Guardian: "They're a tremendous side and I believe they've always beaten Northern Counties teams, but we won 3-2."
"It was a very competitive game and the referee had to warn both teams a couple of times."
"Even on the touchline it got a bit nasty – we were surrounded and threatened at one point – but credit to them, they're a very good side and it was like a cup tie."
"It will definitely have done us some good, it was good preparation and we didn't pick up any more injuries."
Goals from Michael Blythen, Liam Cartledge and youngster Dave Fredrick were enough to give Toyne's men the win, and the enigmatic boss was delighted to see the rise to prominence of an Under 19 star.
He said: "What a prospect Dave Fredrick is."
"Last year he broke his leg and his collar bone while playing for the Under 19s, but he's come back and he's blossoming."
After a torrid pre-season, fraught with injuries, Toyne believes his squad are finally getting back to the depth they will need to survive in the Northern Counties East Premier.
"We still have quite a few lads out, like Ben Rosser and Grant Allot, but we have Matt Smith back from injury and he's been outstanding, like a new signing."
"We're looking like we've got the strength in depth again, despite losing half a dozen quality players."
"We've signed one or two and we have some youngsters stepping up, so I'm more than pleased with the pre-season."
However, Toyne is in no doubt that the jump from Northern Counties East Division One to the Premier will be a tough one.
"We've got a difficult start to the season and I don't want people judging us on the first month – let us get a settled side."
The manager has called on the club's supporters to turn out in great numbers for the opening fixture tomorrow and has reiterated that Dinnington Town still need a chairman.
He said: "We want support and we want a chairman."
"We're desperate for a figurehead at the club and people should realise that we're punching miles above our weight, thanks to the players and their commitment."
"Please back us through thick and thin because the players will be giving 100 per cent."
l Town have signed 21-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday and Mansfield striker Danny Reet on loan from Alfreton.
