STEVE Toyne has signed a player he likens to one of the Premiership's finest.

Striker Pete Smith has made a return to the club and the Dinnington Town boss reckons he could double for Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas.

Smith made his debut from the bench in Tuesday's 2-0 loss at home to league leaders Rainworth Miners Welfare.

Toyne told the Guardian: "Pete's a former Belper and Sheffield club player with good experience of the UniBond league."

"He played for me 12 years ago and is coming back to the fold."

"He's a smashing lad and he's the spitting image of Fabregas, he's his double."

Ever the joker, Toyne added:"I introduced him to the lads on Tuesday as a ringer playing under the name Smith."

The newest addition to Town's squad should help to plug a gap identified by Toyne in recent weeks.

"We've been toothless in the striking department," he said.

"Rob Ward's not on fire at the moment and we've no real pace up front, that's been a problem."

Town's winless streak increased to five matches on Tuesday, but Toyne was upbeat about his side's efforts.

He said: "Over all I was happy with the performance."

"We didn't get a lot of breaks and I was a little bit unhappy with the officials."

A crowd of 113 watched as goals from Danny Naylor and Massiah McDonald gave the NCEL Premier leaders all three points.

"They're a good side, although financially they've got to be a good side, most of their team have come from the UniBond," said Toyne.

"We gave a battling, improved performance and I was happy that everybody gave 100 per cent."

"If everyone does that then we can't ask for more and we had one or two playing with injuries."

Looking ahead to Saturday's visit to Arnold Town, Dinnington's fourth successive encounter with a top seven side, Toyne told the Guardian he'd settle for a share of the spoils.

"I will be happy with a point. We'll obviously go for the win and try to attack but I will be satisfied if we get a draw."

On Wednesday (3rd) next week Town make the trip to Winterton Rangers in the President's Cup semi-final.

A win would see them take on either Arnold Town or Selby Town in the final.
