AN UPSET took place in the Tomlin Trophy Final at Fourth Avenue, Edwinstowe, on Sunday when Division One side Caythorpe II easily saw off the challenge of their Championship opponents Cutthorpe by 54 runs.
The match was hastily switched to Thoresby Colliery’s ground as the usual Worksop venue was water-logged – and what an inspired move it turned out to be.

Caythorpe II began extremely well as they batted first on a pitch that was still drying, and reached in excess of 80 runs with only one wicket down.

Josh Bolus, who has been in great form all season, top scored with a fine 37. He was backed up by Richard Coleman (29), James Oldham (20) and Peter Mansfield (23).

However, after this fine start, they soon lost their way and were nine wickets down for 130, putting Cutthorpe right back in the game.

Tim Haines then drew upon all his experience and managed to help reach the final score of 157 for 9 with some strong blows which kept the scoreboard ticking.

Sajid Hussain (4 for 17) and Andy Knowles (4 for 25) bowled superbly for Cutthorpe, but they would have been disappointed that their grip was loosened at the end when they had the Caythorpe innings on the rack.

Needing a good start, Cutthorpe got just the opposite and wickets fell at regular intervals as the Caythorpe attack enveloped them in a stranglehold.

Not for the first time this season, some of their talented batsmen were made to look rather ordinary by some excellent Caythorpe bowing, and they were dismissed for a rather unflattering 103 with only Chris Cowley (20), Steve Chapman (16) and Rob Plested (12) reaching double figures.

Caythorpe’s Lea Hawkes bowled a superb line and length and was rewarded with figures of 5 for 28 that also deservedly won him Man of the Match.

Incredibly Cutthorpe have contested nine finals and only won once and can be excused if they believe they are jinxed.

However, on this day there can be no excuses as Caythorpe were the better side and Cutthorpe were disappointingly left empty handed once again.

ANDREW Shaw’s 5-11 off 10 overs set the standard as Whitwell earned full points to end a successful second half of the season.

Putting the visitors into bat on a damp track, Shaw’s swing bowling was too much for the Mansfield top order in a devastating opening spell that was well supported by the unlucky Stuart (0-15 from 7 overs).

Though the middle order showed some resolve, with Woodhall hitting 21, once Westerby (1-30) had him caught at first slip, Goodwright’s offspin (4-30) was able to polish off the tale.
