TONIGHT (Friday) sees the annual Grafton AA Juvenile Angling Match, which takes place on the John Shaws length of the Chesterfield Canal.
The draw is taking place in the Lock Keeper car park at 5pm with the fishing from 6pm to 9pm.
There are still a few tickets left in both categories – the 10 to 12-year-olds and the 13 to 16-year-olds.
These are available from Ken Ward Sports, on Carlton Road, at a reasonable £2.
News from the coatal scene is that the boats out of Bridlington are taking big catches of quality cod to 20lb+ from the offshore marks.
The smaller boats are taking catches to 9lb in the more coastal waters. Mackerel are also starting to show, but are still somewhat patchy.
With the upcoming deep water wrecking trip a only two weeks away, things are looking good with skipper Tony Pockley reporting that the potential for really big cod is realistic if the weather holds out.
A request for Trevor Newton (or anybody that knows him) can you contact Roger ASAP regarding the trip.
Mick Pogson, of Worksop & DAA, informs us that Sandhill Lake is suffering from a blue/green algae bloom, and that Bassetlaw Council is monitoring the situation and will be placing warning notices up in the future.
Although it is advised not to swim in the waters or let your pets swim or drink from the lake, we are assured that it is still safe for anglers as long as they take adequate safety precautions and disinfect their hands during and after fishing.
It has also been noted that a number of pleasure anglers have been fishing in pegs 1 to 5, which is strictly forbidden, and any book holders found doing this may have their books confiscated and pleasure anglers may be barred from the fishery.
Finally, a thought from regular reader Brian Roe who, after watching the recent television advert, wonders if anybody has caught on pole and cormorant?
CLUB RESULTS
THE members of Stanley Street Sports and Social AC visited the match lake at Lakeside last Sunday for the first match of their summer series.
Interestingly, the top two places were taken by new members, with Shaun Storey scoring on peg 31 to take a mixed bag of bream, ide and carp on the pole weighing 41lb 9oz to claim first place.
Steve Pogson was a very close second with a similar net caught on peg 26 weighing 40lb 1oz.
Pete Scott claimed third place with 31lb 4oz. The club's next match is on Sandhill Lake on 28th June.
The second evening of the Grafton Permit Holders Match took place on the John Shaw's stretch of the Chesterfield Canal.
Our old friend Ian Turner put together a net of small fish weighing 3lb 12oz to claim the victory on peg 92, with Chris Davenport and Roger Stocks sharing the spoils in second place with 2lb 7oz, each on pegs 106 and 114 respectivly.
Last Thursday, the members of the British Gas AC made the journey to Bank End, where they elected to fish the West Lake.
Ron Wynne just fell short of the magic ton barrier, putting 98lb 11oz of carp on the scales from peg 4 employing the floating pole and pellet waggler.
