DINNINGTON Town manager Steve Toyne blamed defeat to Atherton on an 'injury nightmare' – and gave a heartfelt plea for local Dinnington players to get involved in the club.
After outplaying Atherton in the first period of the FA Cup preliminary round, Toyne said injuries and a lack of fit first team regulars cost his side, as their opponents fought back to win through in the second half.
Town started with confidence an
d took the lead on 28 minutes when a well-struck free kick from the left found Grant Allott to head past the keeper.
But after a string of missed chances, Atherton scored twice late on to take the spoils 2-1.
Toyne described the loss as 'disappointing' and said he felt a fully fit first team would have proved too strong. He added that he now wants local Dinnington people to get involved in the club.
"We were beaten by a superior side, but they are not as good as us at full strength."
"We are in a real state with injuries –I have never known a nightmare like it."
"We had 18 players out injured against Bridlington. For the reserve U19s team last Sunday I had to play myself as there were just no players, including reserves!"
"We want Dinnington people to come and help. Please contact me on 07960 616129 if you can help or you know young players who are good enough to play – we would welcome them with open arms."
Toyne also praised the players and staff for their efforts during a difficult period.
"The local helpers we have are a God-send. We couldn't do without them."
"One of our players, Louis Axel, drives to Grimsby on the morning so that his parents there can babysit for his child."
"He comes back and says if he's on the bench, fair enough. His wife runs a hair salon so he has to take his baby to Grimsby at his own expence."
"We need more players like him – he's a brilliant professional and the players are giving their all for Dinnington."
Toyne went on to say that Town will improve when some of the injured players return, and Saturday's game againsy Armthorpe Welfare could be the start. "When we get the players back results will improve, " he said.
