Welch claims the Big Brother spoils

Outspoken Loose Women star Denise Welch was "lost for words" after being crowned the winner of Channel 5's Celebrity Big Brother.

Despite being embroiled in controversy during the reality show, the former Coronation Street actress received the most public votes in last night's finale, beating runner-up X Factor reject Frankie Cocozza to the title.

Earlier in the programme, former captain of the Welsh rugby team Gareth Thomas, glamour girl twins Kristina and Karissa Shannon and Reservoir Dogs actor Michael Madsen were evicted from the house.

Welch, who broke down in tears when she was named as the winner, was a prominent figure in this year's series, sparking a huge argument by pulling down one of the twin's pyjamas during a boozy night. She also had a love/hate relationship with actor Madsen.

The actress, who wore a black sequinned dress, exited the house to a cheering crowd and exposed her cleavage before telling presenter Brian Dowling: "I don't think I've ever been as lost for words. I can't even talk, oh my God."

Dowling presenter asked her about her relationship with Madsen, to which Welch said: "Until the day I die I will not understand that man."

Earlier in the evening, when Madsen was the third housemate to be evicted on the night, he said to Dowling: "Can you ask security to keep her away from me?"

Cocozza said he had expected to go in and "leave after four days", adding "it went better than I thought." The wannabe singer was kicked off the last series of The X Factor for rule breaking but proved to be a popular housemate. "I was the man of the house," he said.

Rugby star Gareth Thomas, who came out as gay in 2009, came third. He said it was a "massive achievement" not to have been nominated by his fellow housemates to face a public vote during the series.

Contestants who had already been evicted from the house attended the finale, including dancer Andrew Stone, Ryan Giggs' sister-in-law Natasha Giggs, former page three girl Nicola McLean, actress Natalie Cassidy, DJ and rapper Romeo Dunn, reality TV star Kirk Norcross and model Georgia Salpa.
