Woodsetts school is top of the class

STUDENTS, staff and governors at a Woodsetts school were feeling top of the class after a near-perfect report.

Woodsetts Primary, on Wellfield Crescent, was marked as 'outstanding' in all but one of 27 categories by Ofsted officials when they visited in November.

Thrilled headteacher Heather Green described the report as 'very special', and said the hard work of everyone at the school had been deservedly recognised.

"We are just absolutely delighted," she added. "Usually they identify areas where improvements need to be made and say 'this is okay but could be better,' but they were not able to do that here."

"At our last inspection in 2004 we were graded as 'good' and this shows we have built on that."

In fact, the only area not yet classed as 'outstanding' is pupil attendance, which was still above the national average.

"Unfortunately we do have some parents who take their children away for holidays during term time," said Mrs Green.

"But short of stopping them at the airports, that is largely out of our control."

Inspectors met with teachers, managers, governors, parents and pupils and attended lessons to gauge how the 177-child school was performing overall.

Lead inspector Joe Peacock said children in the Foundation stage make outstanding progress, while high standards continue into Year 2.

He added that in reading, writing and mathematics, Year 2 pupils' standards in the 2007 national assessments were significantly above average.

"Community links are strong and pupils are exceptionally well prepared for their future as they learn by example from staff how to be kind, considerate and polite," said Mr Peacock.

"The well established partnership of the headteacher and exceptionally talented deputy headteacher ensures that staff work highly effectively as a team."

Simon Tweed, chairman of the school's governors, thanked the staff, pupils and parents for their efforts.

"We have made great improvements over the past two or three years and this is the icing on the cake really," he said.

"We hope now to maintain these standards and go from strength to strength."

"I have been chairman at Woodsetts Primary for 10 years, and when we first took over it was our goal to get to 'outstanding.' The board are proud to be associated with such a successful school."

"We have discussed attendance over and over again in meetings. What it comes down to is the fact that parents have got to play their part if we are to achieve a perfect report."
