Team wins at media awards
A TALENTED team from a local school have scooped a prize in the Shine School Media Awards.
Dinnington Comprehensive School pupils Jodie Crook and Megan Woodhouse, along with teacher Paul Carr, came top in the Best Community Initiative category for producing the Dinnington Newsletter.
Sir Christopher Meyer, former Ambassador to Washington and previously Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, presented the awards at the ceremony in London.
“We were up against the Falklands Island Community School and the Marist Senior School,” said Mr Carr.
“As they got to our category and Sir Christopher was reading out what the judges thought of the entries, he mentioned the winner had had 3000 copies produced and I realised we had won.”
“It was very pleasing and the girls went the collect the plaque. We won a site wide licence for the latest version of Quark, which is a very useful piece of kit for the school.”
“The girls were extremely pleased to have had their work praised in this way by such distinguished people.”
The team came up with the idea of a newsletter to create stronger links in the Dinnington community.
“We work with the Dinnington Community Champions, who supply the stories, information and images. We then edit the newsletter, design the layout, and look for news worthiness. We have regular meetings and report on progress,” he said.
Clifford Jakes, chairman of the Shine School Media Awards, added: “We were delighted with the calibre of entries and congratulate the winners, but also all the schools that participated.”
“The competition proves that there is a generation of new talent that has the ability to make its mark on the future of the publishing industry.”
