Rotherham top cop's Bluebell Wood gift

BLUEBELL Wood Children's Hospice had a special delivery when Rotherham's top cop dropped by to hand over thousands of pounds.

Rotherham's District Commander Ch Supt Matt Dukes ran all the way from District Headquarters on Main Street in full uniform to the hospice in North Anston to pass over the cash which he raised by running the 26 mile Paris marathon.

"It was my 10th wedding anniversary and I looked back at the photographs of me on the beach and thought that a health kick was in order," said Chf Supt Dukes.

"The police have supported the charity a lot before and I thought this was a great opportunity to raise funds for this important local cause."

"When running 26 miles you have to keep reminding yourself why you're doing it and they do phenomenal work so the motivation was great."

Ch Supt Dukes ran 11 miles to deliver his cheque to the charity in North Anston and although he started off in the rain, he arrived in sunshine.

"I really enjoyed it," he said.

"I still go out on patrol to chase criminals so now they know I can run for 26 miles I should have a better chance of catching them now!"

The money raised will bring the hospice closer to being ready to open so that it can offer day care provision to children and families suffering from life limiting and life threatening conditions.

"We were absolutely delighted with the amount raised," said Caroline Artschan, events organiser for Bluebell Wood.

"This will go a long way to helping us open the doors in September as planned. It's great to have support from the police."

As well as the money raised for Bluebell Wood, the District Commander will be donating 572 to his other chosen charity Get Kids Going, which gives 200,000 disabled children and young people the opportunity to participate in sport.
