Revamp forThurcroft welfare hall

A VITAL community facility is set to benefit from a £9,864 revamp – thanks to a grant from the the Big Lottery Fund.

Thurcroft Welfare Community Hall applied for the cash to fund new entrance doors, fire doors and double glazing.

The fundraising effort has already seen computer screens and new tables and chairs installed at the hall – which was nearly closed down in 2003.

Director, Keith Booth, said: "We're absolutely over the moon – it's a massive boost when you get this sort of funding – this will help give the building a much more attractive appearance."

Campaigners are now hoping for an extra 35,000 to improve toilets, insulation, ceilings and develop a more eco-friendly design.

The windfall is the latest success for four trustees who decided to take the building over in early 2004 to try and bring it back to it's former social glory.

Mr Booth added: "We want to make it a lot more viable as a community facility for the people of Thurcroft. There are other things in the pipeline – 2010 should be a brilliant year for us with a lot of major improvements going on."

The hall hosts community events throughout the year. It is also used by an advice centre, a dance centre and the local council.

Vanessa White, Big Lottery Fund head of Yorkshire and the Humberside region, said: "It's wonderful to see so many groups benefiting from almost 230,000 in grants this month."

"Health is an important issue of our time; these projects are contributing to a more active and a fitter society and we are proud to be able to support them."
