Worksop College meets HRH Duke of Edinburgh

Three pupils from Worksop College were invited to St. James’s Palace where they received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The Gold Awards Presentation is a celebration and recognition of the achievements of the individuals.

Toni Semmence, Thomas Rabbitt and James Wood from Worksop College travelled to London and once inside St James’s Palace were shown to the picture gallery and met former British athlete and Regional Director for Central England DofE Award Scheme Phil Brown.

A spokesman for the college said it was an ‘inspirational’ experience: “In addition to the achievements of the pupils, Worksop College was honoured that two of its members of staff were invited to attend as VIP Guests and to meet HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.”

The invitation was to thank both John Driver and Boyd Smith for their contributions and to recognise the achievements of those from Worksop College in attendance. John Driver has been delivering the DofE at Worksop College for 30 years and is involved in co-ordinating all aspects of the DofE.

Boyd Smith is a DofE Leader and Expedition Trainer, Supervisor and Assessor at Worksop College and has been involved for 14 years. The spokesman added: “HRH The Duke of Edinburgh engaged in conversation and laughter with the award recipients, pausing to speak to James Wood regarding the location of his practice and final expeditions and was then introduced to the VIP guests from the College.”
