THE vital role Police Community Support Officers (PCSO) play in the community has been highlighted by a Maltby burglary.

A 68-year-old woman from Malwood Way has thanked officers for their time and compassion following a burglary at her home.

She contacted police on Monday 17th December, last year to report a burglary.

Jewellery belonging to the woman, which had sentimental value, had been taken, leaving her very upset and shaken.

PCSOs Jacqui Millward and Joy Lavelle attended the property. They reassured the victim and offered her crime prevention advice, while chatting to her and listening to any concerns she had.

Jacqui and her colleague Michelle Marsh, from the Wentworth Valley Safer Neighbourhood Team, also helped a 73-year-old women who had been the victim of an attempted burglary in Flanderwell on 23rd January.

Although nothing was taken the offender had tried to get into the property, leaving the elderly woman very shaken.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “As part of the visits officers can refer victims to other services if need be like victim support who are a great help to many who have suffered a crime.”

“They can also request smartwater for victims of burglary if they are of pensionable age.”

Both ladies have called into South Yorkshire Police to thank the officers for their time and compassion.”

“They both mentioned to senior officers that the Police Community Support Officers had gone above and beyond the call of duty and that South Yorkshire Police could not have done enough for them.”

PCSO Jacqui Millward said: “Providing reassurance to victims of crime is a vital part of our role.”

“Providing follow on support to victims who have suffered crime is comforting and provides a personnel touch.”

“Many are elderly, vulnerable and some live alone with little or no support within the community. If our visits make people feel safer in their homes and enhances their quality of life, it’s a job well done.”
