'Our suitcase went on a nice long trip!'
HOLIDAYMAKER Norman Anderson arrived back in Yorkshire to find his suitcase had been left behind in Spain – because the runway was being repaired.
Norman, from Todwick said he eventually got the case back – but not before it went to all the way to Kenya.
He said: “It ended up travelling a lot further than we did... I’m sure it enjoyed its nice long trip!”
Norman says he was told at least 25 cases had been left at Alicante because they would have made the plane too heavy to take off on the shortened runway.
The passengers knew nothing about Jet2.com’s decision to leave their luggage until they arrived back at Leeds Bradford airport.
Norman, of De Houton Close, Todwick, said: “We thought there was something odd when we had to wait half an hour on the plane because they said the captain was filling in some paperwork, and then that they were refuelling.”
“That seemed strange, because you don’t normally refuel when the passengers are on board because it’s dangerous.”
“I’ve been flying for 40 years so I smelt a rat. We had one little suitcase which we got back, but our big case was left behind.”
Mr Anderson, 64, said they had been promised that their case would be returned as soon as possible by courier, but two days after getting home they still hadn’t got it back.
He said: “I wasn’t even able to have a shave because my razor is in the case. We were given a number to ring that went through to India, then we got a UK one, but it was constantly engaged. It’s very frustrating.”
Norman and his wife Virginia had been on a last-minute week’s holiday to Calpe on the Costa Blanca.
A Jet.com spokeman confirmed that the problem was because of runway maintenance, but said she couldn’t comment on individual cases.
She said: “We can however confirm that Jet2.com has arranged for luggage to be delivered to customers as soon as possible and the courier company arranging to deliver the bags will be liaising with customers directly.
“On behalf of Jet2.com we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
