New Aldi store will create 25 local jobs

A HUGE Aldi store is being proposed in Dinnington on the site of the old Co-op – creating around 25 jobs and breathing new life into the area.

The development, on Laughton Road, would replace the currently derelict building with a 1,358 sq ft budget superstore.

According to local civic leaders it would help regenerate the ‘run down’ area and act as a catalyst for other big chainstores to move in.

Borough councillor Simon Tweed said: ”I think this is a fantastic opportunity for Dinnington.”

”I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two other major retailers became interested in opening up here if Aldi is successful.”

”The company is well known for working with the local community. It would also have a minimal impact on traders as 91 per cent of the goods they sell are their own brand.”

An application is due to be considered by Rotherham Borough Council’s planning committee on 4th February. The new store would include 75 parking spaces for shoppers.

Dinnington Town Council vice chairman Brian Cottam said: ”A lot of people would welcome an Aldi store. It makes life a lot easier for people who currently have to journey up to Tesco.”

Harrogate agents Planning Potential, whose clients include ASDA, Pret-a-manger and Network Rail, have submitted the application for Aldi.

In a statement they said: ”Aldi are committed to investing in Dinnington, and their proposals will help regenerate the town by redeveloping the existing building to create a modern and sustainable foodstore.”

Co-op shut down its store on site in December 2008, just as a new shop opened down the road at Laughton Common.

The Aldi group operates more than 8,000 individual stores worldwide. They are currently opening at a rate of one store a week in Britain, where the total currently stands at 396.
