National Armed Forces Day in Rotherham
THE colossal contribution of Rotherham's servicemen and woman will be formally recognised on Monday.
More than 200 former personnel have been invited to receive their official Veterans Badge as part of the first-ever national Armed Forces Day.
The medals will be presented at Magna by Deputy Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Group Captain Alan Tolhurst OBE DL RAF (Ret) and Rotherham Mayor Coun Shaukat Ali.
Earlier in the day, the official Armed Forces Day flag will be raised outside Rotherham Town Hall. Flags across the country will be raised simultaneously, beginning a week of celebrations.
"This is a great opportunity for us to honour and celebrate the work of our armed forces," said council leader Roger Stone OBE.
"Those who served in the past, and those who are still activity engaged in supporting our country."
"We are delighted that so many people in Rotherham have come forward to be honoured with a formal presentation."
"But we also acknowledge those who have already received their Veterans Badge, and also those who are unable, for whatever reason, to join us at Magna on the day."
"Our appreciation and heartfelt thanks go out to them all."
The events will also be attended by Coun Mahroof Hussain, who said the celebrations were very much part of the 'Rotherham - one town, one community' vision, promoting inclusion and diversity.
"Our armed forces have a proud tradition of attracting people of all colours, faiths and backgrounds, united together in serving their country," he added.
"This is our opportunity to recognise what they have done and continue to do through their service, past and present."
The Magna event is invite only, but members of the public are invited to the flag raising, at 10.30am.
