Maltby miner who died in shaft is named
TRIBUTES have been paid to a Maltby miner who lost his life at the pit yesterday.
Jackie Fisher, 52, from the Doncaster area, died at the pit yesterday after reportedly falling down a mine shaft.
Emergency services were called to the colliery at 5pm yesterday but he was pronounced dead.
Mr Fisher, who was married, had spent most of his life working as a miner.
He began work at Yorkshire Main Colliery in 1972 and came to work at Maltby pit in 1985.
A spokesman for Hargreaves Services, who own the pit, said: "All Mr Fisher's colleagues and our management want to pass on our condolences to his friends and family."
"He had been a member of the Maltby workforce for a very long time."
He added: "There is no coal production at the moment as a health and safety requirement, while an investigation into the death is taking place. Production will stop for a short period."
Further details about the incident are expected to be released later today.
