Maltby man wielded sword in siege drama

A MALTBY man who spent 34 hours barricaded in a house after being jilted by his ex-wife has admitted affray and harassment.

Tony Evernden was alleged to have had a Samurai sword and machete when he went to the Carlton home of his estranged wife Josephine's new partner.

The 46-year-old had been married to her for more than 20 years and could not accept it was ending, said Grace Hale, prosecuting.

Evernden, of King Avenue, denied putting his ex in fear of violence between February 2007 and April 2008. But he admitted affray and an alternative charge of harassment, which were both accepted at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

He also denied aggravated burglary at the Windsor Gardens residence, which was also accepted.

Specialist hostage negotiators and the armed repsonse unit were called during the siege in April in an effort to reach a peaceful solution.

After 36 hours the episode came to an end when Evernden surrendered himself to police.

Evernden was remanded in custody until sentencing on Wednesday 27th August, when the full facts of the case will be outlined.
