Health risks with lambing

Guardian News

Guardian News

With the lambing season approaching Rotherham’s public health team is advising pregnant women to avoid close contact with animals giving birth.

Pregnant women who come into close contact with sheep during lambing may risk their own health, and that of their unborn child, from infections that can occur in some ewes, cows and goats.

Kathy Wakefield, nurse consultant at NHS Rotherham, said “The number of reports of these infections and human miscarriages resulting from contact with sheep is extremely small, however, it is important that pregnant women are aware of the potential risks.”
