Government cuts could close fire stations
Fire bosses in South Yorkshire have warned that fire stations could close as a result of Government cuts.
South Yorkshire's Chief Fire Officer Mark Smitherman said closures would lead to slower response times to attend emergencies.
He also urged the Government to consider the "unique needs" of the fire service before implementing the cuts.
Last month the Guardian reported that South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service had been preparing for the possibility of cuts by launching a public consultation.
That consultation is still ongoing, but, following the announcement that the average cut in public services would be around 25%, Mr Smitherman said it was time to stand up for his staff and the safety of the public.
