Goodbye Ryan

Torrential rain did not stop hundreds of people paying their last respects to Ryan Shaw, the young Harthill man killed in an alleged hit and run accident in Sheffield last month.

Torrential rain did not stop hundreds of people paying their last respects to Ryan Shaw, the young Harthill man killed in an alleged hit and run accident in Sheffield last month.

The service, at the village s All Hallows Church last Friday, saw friends and family members congregate both inside and outside the church.

"It was absolutely packed, the church was overflowing. It was so cruel what happened to Ryan, but it was lovely to see how many people came to pay tribute to him," said Ryan s mum Vicky Shaw.

"The rain was unbelievable. It started pouring down when the funeral started, and ended just after."

"I think it was a sign of how many tears people were shedding. Ryan was such a popular lad."

Grieving friends and relatives walked behind the horse and carriage for a mile to the church.

During the service, Ryan s favourite music was played and his brother Mark made a eulogy.

"It was a really moving day. Mark was quite choked at first, but he said some really nice things."

"We also played Somewhere Over The Rainbow, by Eva Cassidy. It was lovely."

Ryan, 24, died after he was knocked down following a night out in Sheffield with his partner, Amanda Willoughby, her brother and his girlfriend.

The group had got into a car, believing it to be a taxi outside Josephine s Nightclub. When they all got out of the vehicle, near Crystal Peaks, Ryan was knocked down.

He was taken to Sheffield s Northern General Hospital and was put on a life support machine but it was switched off the next day.

Twenty-five-year-old Maurice Pascal Olum, from Sheffield, has been charged with murder, drink-driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

He appeared before Sheffield magistrates and has been remanded in custody until December.
