Go mad about Madagascar this Easter

This Easter the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre is going mad about Madagascar.

Zoo Curator Andrew Reeve said: “We have some amazing Madagascan species at the centre, and with our eagerly-awaited new development Lemur Heights opening this Spring, we decided to celebrate all things great about Madagascar.”

Lemur Heights is the centre’s latest big development.

Construction is underway on this state-of-the-art walk-through exhibit, which will allow both indoor and outdoor viewing of the zoo’s latest arrivals, a lively group of ring-tailed lemurs.

The large enclosure will include a balcony area and walkways reaching out into the enclosure, giving visitors the opportunity of an unforgettable close up experience.

Animal keeper Abigail Carter has been working with the ring-tailed lemurs since they arrived.

“As we expected, there were a few hierarchy squabbles when the group was formed which have now settled down,” she said. “They are very intelligent animals and are fascinating to observe. The largest male of the group has been named King Julian after the character in the popular film Madagascar.”

In the indoor Butterfly House, visitors will find mouse lemurs - the smallest primates in the world and tenrecs - a unique species similar looking to a miniature hedgehog.
