Staff at Tesco in Maltby were doing their bit to help struggling families have a good Christmas when they organised a food bank.
Tesco worked with two charities, FareShare and Trussell Trust, for the Help Feed People in Need campaign.
It took place in over 800 stores across the country and helped provide much needed food for hundreds of thousands of people this Christmas.
Research has found that around 10 per cent of people have suffered from some form of food poverty in the last 12 months.
Seven per cent of people had skipped meals and eight per cent had had to rely on friends or family to provide them with food.
Tesco staff, together with FareShare and Trussell Trust volunteers and Tesco Retired Staff Association members were on hand in Maltby during the campiagn.
They gave customers special shopping lists to encourage them to buy everyday food items like cereals, rice, instant coffee, tinned food and sauces to go into the food bank. Tesco topped up all customer donations by 30 per cent.
The items collected in Maltby nand across the country were redistributed to over 700 local charities and community projects, such as hostels, breakfast clubs, women’s refuges and luncheon clubs for the elderly, just in time for Christmas.
