ELECTION RESULT: Rother Valley

THERE were no shocks in the Rother Valley election when Labour candidate Kevin Barron strolled home an easy winner despite a reduced majority.

It was also good news for the Conservatives who almost doubled their share of the vote.

Labour MP Kevin Barron won 19,147 of the votes down over 2,000 from the 2005 General Election.

"I am very pleased to have been in office for so long and for my votes to have just gone down by 2,000," he said.

"It was a good turnout which is great for democracy."

Mr Barron has held the seat in Rother Valley for past 27 years.

"I need to see what the shape of Government is going to be tomorrow (Friday) before I can say anything about policies, but I want to look after my constituency and the people who live in it- and that's what I will be doing whatever the result."

Conservative candidate Lynda Donaldson who was standing for the first time took home 13,281 votes almost doubling the Conservative figures.

She said: "We're absolutely delighted. It's an excellent result and it's down to my team working very hard and engaging with people, which is something they have not had for 27 years."

"I am fairly confident that people desperately want change."

Losing Lib Dem candidate Wesley Paxton found the party up almost 2,000 votes on 2005 with 8,111 votes in total.

"Considering the resources that the party have at its disposal it was quite a creditable result. I am pleased that the flag has been flown for the Lib Dems."

BNP Will Blair, another first time candidate, snared 3,606 votes an increase on the 2005 result.

"I'd have liked it to have been closer. But when you hear Kevin Barron speak about his campaign team and campaign manager who are there to help him, well we don't have that."

"I have to do it all on my own."

UKIP candidate Tina Dowdall, added that she was disappointed with the result.

"But it's something we can build on," she said. "I am pleased that there has been a good turnout and we will be back."
