A DINNINGTON man, diagnosed as a manic depressive, hung himself after telling his girlfriend the next time she would see him "would be in a box," a coroner's court heard.
Gareth Turner, 22, was found dead in the early hours of 5th June in a field off Leys Lane, Dinnington, near to the junction of Doe Quarry Lane.
Rotherham Coroner's Court heard how Gareth had been diagnosed with the condition in November 2002 and that he had spoken to his girlfriend on the phone in the early hours of 5th June.
"He had told her that the next time she would see him would be in a box so people started looking for him," the Rotherham coroner, Stanley Hooper said.
Dr Terry Marshall, who carried out the post mortem examination said Gareth's death would have come quickly.
"When someone dies like this they become unconscious in about 10-13 seconds, and then it takes a couple of minutes to die - it would have been a completely painless death," he said.
Gareth, who had lived with his mum on Patterson Road, had been beaten up a few months before his death, although the case was later dropped.
Mr Hooper recorded a verdict that Gareth killed himself.
Outside the court, Gareth's mother, Linda Holland disputed that Gareth was a manic depressive.
"Gareth smoked cannabis and I have been told by doctors that he was suffering from a drug induced psychotic illness."
"It was like he had a split personality - if I can help one other lad then I feel I must say something. Cannabis shouldn't be legalised."
