There was a special celebration at a Dinnington care home last week as resident Edith Starr marked her 100th birthday.

And it was an extra special event as Edith was joined by her 102-year-old sister Ruby, who is also a resident at Athorpe Lodge.

The sisters moved into Athorpe Lodge in Dinnington in 2005, and live in neighbouring rooms.

“They spend all day every day with each other, which is lovely for them,” said Athorpe Lodge senior carer Vicky RobertS.

The youngest of four children, Edith was born in Kiveton Park.

After leaving school Edith moved to Anston and then Dinninging, working at Dinnington Infant and Junior school as a cleaner.

“But she worked her way up and ended up working supervising the children on the play ground at dinner time,” said Vicky.

The children at the school all loved her, and even when they had grown they would stop for a chat if they saw her around town.

Edith spent much of her life looking after other people, including members of her family and her neighbours.

An active lady, her hobbies included dancing, looking after her garden and the going to the cinema.

“Edith is an active lady despite her years, and gets about herself with her walking frame,” added Vicky.

Edith celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at Athorpe Lodge, joined by Ruby and other family and friends.

And Edith’s secret to a long and happy life is a very simple one.

“I just enjoy life,” she said.
