‘Be a good neighbour during winter weather’ - urges Notts County Council

WORKSOP residents are being encouraged to be a good citizen by helping to keep roads, paths and pavements clear and keeping an eye out for vulnerable neighbours as more snow falls today (Monday 14th January).

The authority is advising people to play their part in keeping the county on the move by following the Government’s Snow Code which gives clear advice on clearing snow and ice safely.

If people are fit and able they should clear residential streets and pavements near to their home if possible and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to see if they are well and have access to food and drink.

People are also being advised to allow extra time to clear their cars of snow and to drive carefully during the wintry conditions.

The weather has not currently caused any disruption to County Council services, including its Meals at Home service, and no schools in Worksop are expected to close today.

Coun Richard Jackson, chairman of the council’s committee for transport and highways, said: “The Council already has more salt in stock than the Government is recommending, enabling us to play our key role in gritting the main roads across the county.”

“Our top priority during wintry conditions is to ensure the main roads and key public transport corridors are passable so that emergency services and as many people as possible are able to carry out essential journeys. “

He added: “We aim to cover minor roads if possible but would appreciate if able local people can help clear snow from their road and path outside their home if it is safe to do so. “

“Vulnerable neighbours may also find it difficult to go shopping for food so it is worth checking to see if they need any help during the cold spell.”

The council has just under 17,000 tonnes of salt in store at the moment with the capacity to store a total of 22,000 across the county in various depots – that is around 12,000 more than the official Government recommendation.
