Bassetlaw MP John Mann is continuing the fight for miners
BASSETLAW MP John Mann has instigated action against a total of 23 firms of solicitors in relation to the miners' compensation scheme.
BASSETLAW MP John Mann has instigated action against a total of 23 firms of solicitors in relation to the miners' compensation scheme.
Mr Mann has also written to Lord Justice Turner requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the state of affairs of the scheme after it was revealed that it was being investigated by South Yorkshire Police's economic crime unit.
The Bassetlaw MP has, over the last year, referred a number of cases to the legal watchdog the Law Society.
In some cases they have ordered law firms to pay back fees they have taken away from successful claimants.
"Everyday there are more and more people coming forward and over the last couple of days I have received some very interesting documents that will be of use to the inquiry," said Mr Mann on Wednesday.
"There are a number of ways that people can try and get their money back."
"One way is by going through the Law Society and another is to join the group litagation claim."
"Either way I would urge anyone who has paid money to a solicitor or claims handler to contact me."
Last week, Notts based solicitors Hopkins offered to pay back fees of up to 500 that had been paid by ex-miners to Vendside, the claims handlers for the Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM).
Vendside and the UDM have been at the centre of the police investigation and the claims handler's director Mick Stevens and claims manager Clare Walker have stood down from their posts until the end of the inquiry.
It emerged this week that a third firm of solicitors has financial links to a company owned by Miss Walker, Indiclaim Ltd, which is also a focus of the investigation.
In addition to the rulings by the Law Society a London based solicitors, Greene Wood and McLean, are taking a group litigation claim to the High Court to try and win money back for claimants who have paid fees.
