A NEW chief executive has been appointed at Bassetlaw Hospital.

Mike Pinkerton has been given the top role at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Pinkerton, who lives in Retford, has been acting chief executive on Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals since September last year, and takes up his new role with immediate effect.

The married father-of-three rejoined the trust in June, last year as director of transformation.

He then took on the dual role of acting chief executive/director of transformation in September following the departure of Ron Calvert, the trust’s previous chief executive who left for a new role on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Mr Pinkerton’s appointment was given the seal of approval by the trust’s board of governors in January.

He was the preferred candidate from a ‘extremely strong’ field of shortlisted candidates. His appointment follows an open recruitment process which began last summer and ended with interview being held in November, last year.

Mr Pinkerton said: “I am delighted to have been appointed chief executive.”

“It’s a pleasure to be working with the excellent staff in the trust, and our partners, in developing our services.”

“I am looking forward to ensuring the trust’s continued success as a healthcare provider of high quality services.”

Trust chairman Chris Scholey felt Mr Pinkerton was the right candidate for the job.

He said: “We are very fortunate to have Mike. His strong leadership and clear vision will certainly steer us through the future challenges we face as an organisation.”

Mr Pinkerton has an MSc in public sector management and was on the NHS General Management Training Scheme. His background is in medical and industrial electronics, business and NHS general management.

He was the former director of corporate development of Bassetlaw Hospitals and Community Services NHS Trust. He then became director of strategic development, following the merger of Bassetlaw Hospitals and Community Services NHS Trust with Doncaster Royal and Montagu Hospital NHS Trust in 2001. In 2008, he moved to take on a role as quality director for the National Cancer Peer Review Programme.

He had a brief period as chief of business development at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust before rejoining Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust.
