ROYALTY came to Maltby on Thursday, as HRH Prince Andrew officially opened a multi-million pound school.

The Duke – who is the second son of the The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh – flew in to Maltby Crags Junior and Infants by helicopter to the delight of the flag-waving crowds.

"A Prince coming to Maltby Crags is a dream come true for our children," said infant school headteacher Sheila Ralph.

"They work very hard in school and have achieved so much."

"It is a wonderful experience for the whole school community. His arrival in a helicopter on the school field was the icing on the cake for the children, I cannot wait to read the creative fairy tales they contrive from this experience."

Maltby Crags School was one of the 15 built as part of the £96million Rotherham PFI project.

It was completed through a partnership of Rotherham Council and Transform Schools, and completed in 2005, costing £6million.

"Maltby Crags pupils have already seen the benefits these new buildings have brought, and the community has also found the new school to be a valuable local resource," said Coun Shaun Wright, Rotherham Council's cabinet member for Children and Young People's Services.

"The Rotherham PFI project has given us a series of new schools which provide the foundation for the future of education in Rotherham."
