FROM tens of thousands of entries, she has already made it into the final 44 of a prestigious national beauty pageant with a difference.

Now a Swallownest woman is campaigning to be crowned Miss Earth UK, the only such competition devoted to raising environmental awareness.

Nichola Rodgers, of Park Street, said her interest in all things green has increased since her campaigning began.

"I'm no expert, but I've learned a lot already," said the 22-year-old, who works as an auditor in Sheffield.

"I'm a lot more interested in it all, and it's amazing just how much you can help the environment by doing the little things. Just reusing carrier bags, reducing waste and buying fresh food to use less packaging can make such a difference."

The UK final takes place in Leamington Spa at the end of August, and Nichola – one of just two entrants to win through from the whole of Yorkshire and Humberside – remains confident about her chances.

"Originally, I just filled out a profile online," she said. "Then they sent me an email to say I had got into the semi-final, which was also judged online. They use the internet a lot to save on paper."

"My goal is to raise as much awareness of the environment as possible around Sheffield and Rotherham by educating people on the three Rs. These are reduce, reuse and recycle. I want to encourage our community to plant trees and learn about the easy ways we can reduce the negative impact we have on our earth."

"I'm meeting with the environmental strategy people at Sheffield Council to see how they can support me. I'm also targeting local garden centres and schools. I would like also to raise as much money as possible for the World Wildlife Fund, which will be present at the final."

Miss Earth – launched in 2001 – carries the slogan 'Beauties for a cause'. Nichola has entered other beauty competitions in the past, but says this one has been a much more worthwhile experience.

"It's one of the three most prestigious pageants in the world, and the only one raising awareness of environmental issues," she said. "Part of the grand final will be showing how you can actually educate people about the environment."

"So it's not only a glamorous occasion and a prestigious award, it's a very worthy cause."

Her employers, Ant Marketing, have sponsored Nichola and she will sport the company logo during next month's final. Winning would mean she goes on to represent the UK against 90 nations at the international event in the Philippines in October.

"I'm trying to support and get involved where I can," said fiance Craig Evans. "She's doing really well with it. I think she's already got far enough to be proud of herself."

A public vote takes place along with the main judgement at the final. To vote, text 'Nichola Rodgers' to 84205, or call 0901 656 1570 and select option 08. Lines open on Friday 1st August and every vote, costing £1, includes a 15p donation to the WWF's One Planet One Future campaign.
