Maltby road is an 'accident waiting to happen'

MALTBY'S Braithwell Road 'is an accident waiting to happen' claim residents, who say double parking and dangerous driving is becoming a nightmare.
The road, which is home to Maltby Comprehensive School, has been highlighted as a problem by Maltby Forum, which has asked all residents to think before parking close to the school.
"We have serious concerns that the lives of pedestrians may be at risk," said Alice Rogers, a member of the Maltby Forum management committee.
"We are trying to raise awareness and we are asking people to be thoughtful about how they park."
"We are asking people to either drive and park further away from the road, use public transport or walk where possible."
Work is currently taking place on the road to develop a new swimming pool, which residents say has added more troubles to the already problematic road.
One woman, who lives opposite the school, says that she fears that there could be a serious incident.
"It's an accident waiting to happen," said Liz Mason.
"What concerns me is when the cars are parked up and children are crossing the road. It's a nightmare."
"They just wander out but there are cars one way and lorries on the other. A lot of it is down to the kids themselves. It's even worse because they're allowed out of school at lunchtime so they are around three times a day."
"I think it's even worse with the building works because the parking spaces that are there go very quickly."
"It's bad too because there aren't any pedestrian crossings on this road."
"Although no-one blocks my driveway, I'm very aware of doors slamming and people coming and going all the time," said Liz.
Maltby Forum issued a press release raising concerns about the 'insufficient off-street parking to meet the needs of all staff and users of the town's comprehensive school, Civic Centre and Health Clinic.'
Another resident says she has seen people driving illegally to avoid the congestion.
"It's terrible," said Teresa, also of Braithwell Road.
"It was always bad anyway because of the school. Even in a car you have to be careful to get past."
"I've often seen lorries going past the bollards and some people going through the No Entry lane in the car park at the Health Centre because they don't want to wait to go around to the front entrance."
"I think there should be something done because it's quite bad and dangerous. If you want to get somewhere you either can't or it takes ages because you don't want to scrape people's cars."
Commenting on the situation on the road, David Sutton, headteacher at Maltby Comprehensive, said: "We haven't had major issues but it has caused us to be even more vigilant."
"We are having to work with the young people because there is more congestion with parked vehicles."
"We have regular communications with the contractors and when there have been road closures they have kept us in the loop and we have been able to make other arrangements."
Maltby Forum say they hope that the parking situation will ease following the October 2008 opening of the first phase of the Services Centre building.
