RESIDENTS in Maltby were warned to close their windows and doors on Monday 19th May when a fire containing asbestos began in a nearby allotment.
A total of 16 firefighters from Maltby, Aston and Edlington fire stations attended the incident on Tickhill Road, behind the Lumley Arms pub. They were battling the flames for more than three hours after the fire started at 12noon.

Items including pieces of roofing and drain pipes were involved in the fire which were believed to contain asbestos. Fire crews stayed well back from the blaze to avoid inhalation.

Police officers visited all houses around the site to ensure that all windows and doors were kept closed until the fire was put out just after 3pm.
