RESIDENTS and councillors at Wednesday night's Maltby Town Council meeting were stunned to see clerk David Morton suspended from his duties.
People had turned up to hear the discussion of items such as the removal of public payphones and the possible acquisition of the cross from the former Bede Church.

But in a shock move after the initial public consultation period, chairman Coun Ben Slade proposed a motion for the immediate suspension of Mr Morton - drawing the meeting to a rapid and dramatic close.

"I am asking for a seconder to the proposal that Mr Morton be suspended from his duties with immediate effect on full pay," he said. "This is pending a full disciplinary hearing on Friday 20th June."

Eight councillors voted in favour of the motion, with an angry four vehemently opposing the decision to see Mr Morton removed.

Vice-chairman Coun Mark Ainsworth said a number of councillors felt the clerk's behaviour had recached unacceptable levels and that it was time for action.

"It has been going on for so long and we always have to defend ourselves at meetings, but there's more to it," he said. "It will all come out."

But Couns Keith Stringer and Lynn Laird were violently opposed to the decision and slammed Coun Slade for adding the item to the agenda at the last minute.

"This is absolutely unprofessional and you know it," said Coun Laird. "We should've had three days notice about this."

The public clapped as Mr Morton, who refused to comment further on his suspension, left the building.

His case is due to be heard on Friday 20th June.

To clear up a confusing part of your report - the clapping heard when Mr Morton left was not in support. Theres an increasing number of public attending these meetings, dissatisfied generally with some of the remnants of the old council.
Well done to Ben Slade, step one to getting the council moving.

Agree with the comment by Gambatte. I do not know of any member of the public at the meeting who was in disagreement with Ben Slade. It also needs to be noted that as your reporter was late into the meeting, she did not witness the abuse and derogatory comments given to the public by a particular councillor when his attitudes were questioned. He announced that he "does not give a damn". A shame, as most Maltby people DO ...
