OUR Guardian Rose is presented this week to a nurse who has always gone the extra mile to help look after residents at a Dinnington care home.
Nikki Walker has worked at Athorpe Lodge, off Falcon Way, for 12 years – starting two months after it opened in early 1996.

Now Nikki, 39, is emigrating to Australia with her family, but her colleagues made sure she had a proper send-off by presenting her with our community prize.

"She has often given up her days off to come out on trips we've organised," said activities co-ordinator Sue Hughes, who joined the home shortly after Nikki.

"Without her, we wouldn't have been able to take nursing residents on trips to the theatre and other places."

"She's always been a brilliant nurse to all the residents and well-liked by the staff. They're a good team and work together well. Nothing is too much trouble for Nikki where the residents are concerned – she'll do anything for them."

Parting gifts from the Athorpe Lodge team included chocolates, a watch and other gifts that will be easily packed when she sets off Down Under.

"They've been great to me," said Nikki, of Windermere Close, Worksop. "They have supported me through thick and thin, and they keep me on my toes. I love looking after the residents here as they have so much to offer. I'm going to miss them as well as the staff."

Nikki, along with husband Andy and their two boys, Daniel, 12, and eight-year-old Evan, will move to Ipswich in Queensland, to chase their elder's Olympic dream.

"Daniel is very much into his swimming," she said. "It's his ambition to swim at the Olympics. The facilities out there are simply second to none. I'm looking forward to the move. It's just the thought of saying goodbye that's getting to me. It's been a pleasure to work here."

The Guardian Rose is presented in association with Aston Hall Hotel and Limeland's Florists on Laughton Road, Dinnington. Our aim is to honour dedicated individuals who give so much to our community – but are rarely thanked for their valuable contribution.

At the end of the year, Guardian readers will select their overall favourite Rose winner – who will receive a meal and bed and breakfast at Aston Hall in recognition of their good deeds.

If you know someone deserving, call our office on 01909 543014 or send your nomination to: Dinnington Guardian, 64 Laughton Road, Dinnington, S25 2PS.

You can also click here to email your nomination.
