THERE were floods of tears from family and friends as brave teenager Kevin Bonser attended his school prom on Tuesday night.
The youngster was just 14 when he was knocked down outside Aston Comprehensive School in January 2007, suffering life-threatening injuries.

After being confined to a hospital bed for well over a year, Kevin had all but lost touch with his classmates - until the school sorted the surprise invite and limo for the glittering prom.

"It was unbelievable to see," said mum Nicky, of Byron Road, Dinnington. "It was a huge surprise for Kevin when they brought the ticket round for him a few weeks ago, he was really excited and happy to be going."

"I think he was a bit nervous as he was getting ready, he wasn't sure what to expect after not seeing them for so long. But when he arrived they all stood up and cheered for him."

"He had a brilliant night, and it was a wonderful chance for him to say goodbye."

Kevin was left with severe head and leg injuries in the accident, then had a stroke in hospital and was left paralysed down his left. He spent half a year at Sheffield Children's Hospital before being taken to a brain injury specialist centre for children in Surrey.

He finally returned home in April, and now attends a different school, which caters for his special needs. But staff and students at Aston were determined not to overlook him when drawing up plans for the do in Sheffield this week.

Pastoral manager Denise Thackery said: "Kevin would have been one of our Year 11s, and because he was always such a popular pupil, we wanted to make sure he didn't miss out, so long as he was well enough to attend."

"And, in fact, he loved it. He was even able to get up to his feet, with the help of his carers, and say a few words in front of everyone."

"He thanked them for inviting him, and it was a very emotional moment for us all."
