A KIVETON man took centre stage at a special football match to commemorate his famous uncle.

Ken Chapman, of School Road, is the nephew of footballing legend Herbert Chapman and was invited to present a trophy at a match between the two clubs he led to victory.

Huddersfield Town celebrated its centenary with a game against Arsenal at the Galpharm Stadium in honour of their Kiveton born hero.

"It was fantastic," said Ken, who went to the game with his daughter Kay and Herbert's grandson, Peter Berwick.

"We were treated like royalty. We had a director's box and had a meal on the same table as John Motson. I was introduced to the crowd as Herbert's nephew and everyone cheered."

Arsenal won the game 2-1 and Ken presented the trophy, entitled the Herbert Chapman Trophy, to the team before a crowd of nearly 20,000 fans.

He added: "It was thrilling. It was an honour to be there and to see how much they thought of this man was fantastic."

Herbert Chapman had a broad footballing career, playing for Tottenham Hotspur, Sheffield United and Northampton before becoming manager of Huddersfield Town where be took the club to FA Cup victory. He then went on to manage Arsenal where he led the team to three league titles in 1933, 1934 and 1935 before he died of pneumonia at the age of 55.

Ken's daughter, Kay Archer, says she was proud to be there with her Dad on this very special occasion.

"It was absolutely fantastic for Dad and Peter Barwick," said Kay.

"John Motson said that Herbert would be smiling as he was looking down at the future talent of Arsenal that was on show."

"Personally it was great to see my Dad see the fruition of so much hard work pulling the family history together."

Ken, who is also chairman of the Kiveton and Wales Historical Society, has been working for months to make his uncle's name known in Kiveton where he was born.

Wales Parish Council has agreed to fund a plaque, designed by Ken, in Herbert's memory to go in Kiveton and Wales Village Hall.

The plaque is now in production.

Ken is also writing a book about the Chapman family history, which he hopes to have completed by Christmas.
