The Modfather rocks at Pines
IT took time for Paul Weller and the Sherwood Pines crowd to warm to each other – perhaps each was expecting something more from the other.
But Weller is famously a man who answers to nobody and at one point even ticked off the crowd for being ‘a bit quiet’.
His set included solo classics including The Changing Man and Wild Wood as well as throwing in well-loved numbers from The Jam and The Style Council.
The 10,000-strong crowd was very mixed. There were families, friends and a surprising amount of people sporting Weller’s haircut.
As darkness closed in, the atmosphere went from good to electric.
I couldn’t have been happier standing in the crowd with a cider in hand.
Weller certainly wouldn’t be out of place headlining at a festival – and there was a shorter queue to the girls’ toilets than the men's.
These Forestry Commission gigs are fast becoming highlights of my summer calendar.
When the finale arrived with The Jam favourites That's Entertainment and A Town Called Malice, I could swear even the trees were moving in time.
