Granny’s dishes up a 5 star experience
Granny's Vintage Tea Room opens in Todwick (w121009-5b)
AFTERNOON tea is one of my all time favourite things to do.
So when I discovered a new tea room had recently opened in Todwick I just had to give it a try.
On walking in to Granny’s Vintage Tea Room you can’t help but smile. You are instantly transported back to the 1950s, with vintage china, pastel colours and white table cloths. Through the back there is a parlour with more seating and a children’s play area.
We took a seat on the big comfy sofa in the parlour and had a look at the menus. There was plenty on offer including a good selection of sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks. But I knew straight away there was only one choice for me. It had to be an afternoon tea.
After much deliberation my husband Martin decided to join me. Not only did we get to select a sandwich filling of our choice, we also had three types of jam to decide between and a vast array of teas.
I went for a tuna and lemon mayonnaise sandwich, while Martin opted for the roast beef and caramelised onion. We both went for Earl Grey tea and raspberry jam with our scones.
Within a few minutes of ordering our pot of tea had arrived. Served in a lovely vintage teapot, with dainty cups and saucers, there was more than enough to keep two people going for a while.
A few minutes more and our food arrived. Served on individual cake stands - one for each of us - we were presented with a generously sized sandwich, along with three tastes of cakes.
This was accompanied by a silver basket containing two scones, with a generous serving of jam and clotted cream. We were told to ring the bell on our table if we needed anything more.
We both started with the sandwiches which were excellent. Rather than dainty triangles without crusts, they were large, soft rolls absolutely packed with filling. A nice extra touch was the salad leaves and grapes served with them.
Then it was time to move on to the sweet selection. The scones were baked to perfection and tasted out of this world.
The cakes were also to die for. The apple cake was moist and flavoursome with just a hint of cinnamon coming through.
The chocolate brownie was rich and perfectly baked. A crunch on the outside with a rich and soft centre. And the lemon cake was zesty and moist, with the perfect balance of citrus and sweetness.
At just £8.50 each this was an absolute delight, and a real bargain.
Martin said Granny’s Vintage Tea Room was in his top three afternoon teas of all time. And I would have to agree. And considering one of them was in a five star hotel in Tokyo, that is high praise indeed.
Just remember to have cash as they don’t take card payments.
